We’ve fixed a transcription bug that affected words like sharing, caring, staring, and many other “-ing” verbs.
What Was Wrong?
These words were showing up without the “r” sound:
| Word | Before (Wrong) | After (Correct) |
|---|---|---|
| sharing | /ˈʃeəɪŋ/ | /ˈʃeərɪŋ/ |
| caring | /ˈkeəɪŋ/ | /ˈkeərɪŋ/ |
| staring | /ˈsteəɪŋ/ | /ˈsteərɪŋ/ |
Why Does This Happen in British English?
In British English, the “r” at the end of words like “share” and “care” is normally silent—you don’t hear it when saying the word on its own.
But here’s the interesting part: when you add “-ing,” that silent “r” suddenly comes back to life! This is called the linking R, and it’s one of the fascinating features of British pronunciation.
The “r” appears because it helps connect the schwa sound (ə) to the vowel that follows (ɪ). It makes the word flow more smoothly.
What This Means for You
If you’re learning British pronunciation, you’ll now see the correct transcriptions for hundreds of common verbs:
- prepare → preparing /prɪˈpeərɪŋ/
- compare → comparing /kəmˈpeərɪŋ/
- declare → declaring /dɪˈkleərɪŋ/
- and many more!
